Design and operational strategies analysis of a river aeration system

Dissolved oxygen is an important indicator of the health of any aquatic ecosystem since it is fundamental for many forms of aquatic life. It is therefore a prerequisite for meeting the Water Framework Directive (WFD). To avoid low levels of dissolved oxygen in the Dommel River caused by e.g. unavoidable sewer overflows under extreme wet weather conditions, Waterboard De Dommel (The Netherlands) will install aeration systems along certain stretches of the river.

This project aims to verify the design and operational strategies of the aeration system that will be installed in the river stretch just upstream of the discharge point of the Eindhoven WRRF. To achieve these objectives, a detailed computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model will be developed and validated. Moreover, different scenarios of placement of aeration skids will be studied. The objective is to learn in more detail about the system performance and use this knowledge to apply trustworthy control strategies.
