A model is a mathematical representation of reality. It describes the underlying fundamental laws of a system required to explain the observed behaviour. Therefore, a model-based investigation directly aims at increasing fundamental knowledge which can be used to improve the design and operation of the process under study. Indeed, a good model provides understanding of how a process reacts or works under different configurations or conditions. The power of mathematical models lies in the fact that they can be used for testing and evaluating different scenarios without having to actually perform the physical experiments.
